One of the first questions The Tomlinson Advertising Agency talks about with our clients is who their target customer is. This may seem like a simple and straight-forward question, but advertisers rarely think about this question with the depth that they should.

The answer is certainly not as simple as “anyone that has money” or “anyone that wants to buy my product”.

Any successful advertising campaign will hyper-identify what the target demographic is for the client, before any recommendations can be made at all. As advertising partners with your business, it’s crucial that we know a some very specific things about the type of customer you would most want to walk through your doors.

What is their Age? What is their income levels? What is their spending habits? What is their gender? Where do they live? How far would they travel for your product or service? Do they have family / kids? What type of Jobs do they work? What are their hobbies? What do they drive? What is their political affiliation? Are they religious?

Way too often we see advertising dollars wasted by delivering ads or impressions to the wrong demographic, or too broad of a demographic, never yielding the quality results desired by the advertiser.
